Experiences and reports in the occupation of spaces
2018
I was a scholarship holder of the Institutional Program of Scholarships for Initiation to Teaching (PIBID), under the coordination of Professor Arthur Leandro, in 2018, for the realization of an educational project at the State School of Elementary and High School Mário Barbosa.
From discussions started about the absence of women in the history of art, we realized that most of the class was composed of women and black students, so we felt the need to deal with these topics.
However, there was a difficulty: how to approach this subject if the two scholarship holders were men? We chose to adopt a listening position in which we let the students conduct the process, those who felt comfortable to participate. We stayed there, then, as mediators. As for the boys, we asked them to talk to women in the family and tell us what they were told.
As a methodological procedure, conversation groups were used, in which we initially read a text collectively and then discuss it together with the class. From the experiences and reports of the students, many of them occurred in the school, the unfolding of the discussions on machism took place. The same methodology was adopted for issues involving racial themes.
In this way, after doing workshops on stencil and color mixtures, together we started to occupy an abandoned space in the school with the use of phrases already heard by the students themselves.
When we asked the class what they thought of the project, they gave a positive feedback and said that they had never discussed topics like this in class.
Our idea was that the students would produce a place for themselves, for their coexistence, and that it would last not only the time of the project, but that it would remain as a legacy for the school, with the students themselves being responsible for its maintenance. There was no specific purpose for the space, it could be used for extra-class activities.
